An oven that does not heat may still have working lights, a responsive display, one working mode, or a preheat cycle that starts and stops. Record those boundaries without opening panels or naming a failed component. First confirm whether the appliance is electric, gas, or dual fuel, because gas odour changes the safety response immediately.

The short answerCancel the cycle if the oven produces no heat, stops heating, shows a fault code, smells unusual, or behaves differently from normal. Record the selected mode and temperature, display message, sounds, and whether any warmth develops. Do not reach near an element, igniter, vent, or live connection; do not keep testing a gas oven that fails to ignite or produces a gas odour.

Which function is not heating?

  • The display is blank and no controls respond
  • Bake starts but the oven stays cold
  • Broil works while bake does not, or the reverse
  • Preheat begins but never reaches the selected temperature
  • Heating stops partway through the cycle
  • A fault code, clicking pattern, or repeated ignition sound appears

For a double oven, record which cavity is affected. For a range, note separately whether surface burners or elements work. A functioning display or another working mode does not establish the cause of the oven symptom.

Non-invasive checks before requesting help

  1. Confirm the cooking mode. Record bake, convection, broil, proof, delayed start, Sabbath mode, or another selected setting. Use the model manual to rule out a control mode.
  2. Photograph the display. Capture the exact fault code, clock state, and selected temperature before resetting anything.
  3. Observe from outside the closed oven. Note normal or unusual sounds, whether the interior light works, and whether the display indicates preheating. Do not place a hand near a heating component to test it.
  4. Record recent events. Include a power outage, breaker trip, cleaning cycle, spill, installation, move, or control change without assuming causation.
  5. Stop repeated preheat attempts. Repeated ignition or electrical cycling can add risk and erase the original sequence of events.

If you smell rotten eggs or suspect escaping gas: stop what you are doing, do not operate electrical switches or create an ignition source, go outside, and call from outside.   • Any clicking, repeated ignition sound, odour, smoke, spark, or unusual heat
  • Recent outage, installation, spill, cleaning cycle, or breaker event
