Uneven cooking can mean one side browns faster, the centre stays underdone, preheat takes longer, or results vary between bake and convection. A single tray of food is not a diagnosis. A provider can use a repeatable pattern, appliance settings, rack position, and recent changes to decide what needs inspection.
Describe the uneven result precisely
- Food browns faster on the left, right, front, or back
- The outer edge cooks before the centre
- Upper and lower racks produce different results
- Bake and convection behave differently
- The oven overshoots, undershoots, or cycles unpredictably
- Preheat or total cooking time changed noticeably
Include whether the pattern repeats across different recipes or appears only with one pan, rack, mode, or large load. Do not claim a precise temperature error from food appearance alone.
Safe ways to make the request clearer
- Write down the full setup. Record mode, selected temperature, preheat indication, rack level, number of pans, and pan material or colour.
- Photograph before moving food. A wide photo showing the rack and a close photo showing browning can preserve the pattern.
- Check normal airflow space. Follow the model manual for rack and pan placement. Do not block vents or line oven surfaces unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it.
- Compare modes only during ordinary cooking. Note whether bake, convection bake, and broil differ; do not run an empty oven repeatedly solely as a test.
- Record an existing thermometer reading carefully. If you already use an oven-safe thermometer as directed, note its location and reading over time. One spot reading does not establish calibration or a failed part.
- Note recent changes. Include a moved rack, new cookware, power outage, cleaning cycle, control adjustment, installation, or door-closure change.
Stop using the oven for a gas odour, visible flame outside the normal burner area, smoke unrelated to food, sparking, a shock sensation, a burning-insulation smell, a door that will not close safely, or uncontrolled overheating. If you smell gas, leave the area and follow current FortisBC gas-leak guidance from outside. Do not keep testing the appliance.
Information for an uneven-heating request
- Brand, model number, approximate age, and fuel type
- Single or double oven and which cavity is affected
- Mode, selected temperature, rack position, and preheat behaviour
- Where food overcooks or undercooks and whether the pattern repeats
- Pan type, size, colour, and whether one or multiple pans were used
- Any fault code, unusual sound, odour, flame, or door-gap observation
- Recent outage, installation, cleaning cycle, cookware, or control change

If the oven stays cold or stops heating, start with oven not heating. If the oven works but one electric cooktop element does not, read electric range burner not working.
