A longer cycle becomes useful evidence when it is compared with the same kind of load, cycle, and starting wetness. One heavy towel load is different from every familiar load suddenly taking much longer. Record the change instead of running the dryer repeatedly until the clothes finally dry.
Build a fair before-and-after comparison
“Too long” is clearer when the request includes a baseline. Record:
- A familiar load now needs an extra cycle
- Only towels or another heavy load are affected
- Clothes enter the dryer wetter than before
- The load stays cool throughout the cycle
- The load becomes hot but remains damp
- An automatic cycle ends early or runs unusually long
Include the approximate elapsed time rather than a rounded claim about how long dryers “should” take. Fabric, load size, washer extraction, cycle choice, room conditions, appliance design, and airflow can all change the result.
Start with the user-accessible lint screen
Natural Resources Canada advises cleaning the lint trap after every load to improve airflow and cleaning dryer vents regularly. Its clothes dryer efficiency guidance also warns against overfilling because it restricts airflow.
With the dryer stopped and cool, remove lint from the accessible screen as the manual directs. Record whether it was lightly coated, heavily blocked, damaged, or difficult to seat. Do not run the dryer without the screen, push tools into the lint housing, or open the cabinet.
Safe observations beyond the lint screen
- Check the washer result. Note whether clothes are emerging wetter than usual before they enter the dryer.
- Reduce variables. Record load size, fabric type, selected cycle, temperature, and dryness setting.
- Confirm tumbling. Note steady movement, an early stop, pauses, or a new sound.
- Describe heat without touching hidden parts. Say whether clothes are cool, normally warm, or unusually hot at the end.
- Look at visible venting only. Without moving the dryer, record a crushed, detached, or damaged section you can already see.
- Note room effects. Excess lint, moisture, or unusual heat near the dryer is worth reporting, but it does not establish the cause.
Do not climb to an exterior vent, remove a wall cover, disconnect the duct, or reach behind a running or hot appliance. Ask the provider whether vent inspection or cleaning is within scope.
Long cycles can become a safety concern: Health Canada says lint remaining in a dryer screen or exhaust piping can ignite at high temperatures and cause fires. Stop using the dryer for burning odour, smoke, sparks, unusual heat, a damaged cord or plug, gas odour, or a carbon-monoxide alarm; do not run another cycle to gather more evidence.
What to include in the dryer request
- Electric or gas dryer, brand, model number, and approximate age
- Load type, approximate size, and how wet it was after washing
- Cycle, heat, dryness setting, and approximate elapsed time
- Whether the drum turns and clothes finish cool, warm, or unusually hot
- Lint-screen condition and normal cleaning routine
- Any visible vent damage that can be observed without moving the dryer
- Changes in room lint, moisture, heat, sound, odour, or fault codes
- Whether every load is affected and when the change began
A provider may need to assess the dryer, vent path, installation, and load conditions before identifying the cause. Your request should preserve that uncertainty.
