A dryer that powers on without turning has a different primary symptom from a dryer that tumbles but stays cool. Record what the controls and drum actually do, when movement stops, and whether any safety warning appeared. Those observations help route the request, but they cannot identify a failed part from a webpage.
First separate no movement from no heat
Use the strongest visible observation rather than treating every drying problem as the same issue:
- Controls respond, but the drum does not turn
- The drum begins turning and then stops early
- The drum turns only with a very small load
- A new thump, scrape, squeal, or hum accompanies the stop
- The drum turns normally, but clothes and air stay cool
- The drum turns and heats, but familiar loads take longer
A turning-but-cool drum belongs in the dryer not heating guide. A drum that turns and heats but needs extra time belongs in the long dryer cycle guide. This page owns the distinct observation that the drum does not turn normally.
What to observe without forcing another cycle
- Stop after the symptom is clear. Do not repeat starts to make a sound easier to capture or to see whether the drum eventually moves.
- Record the control response. Note whether the display, start control, timer, and interior light behave normally, and photograph any code after the dryer is stopped.
- Describe the sound. Say whether there was silence, a hum, a click, scraping, squealing, or one heavy thump. Record timing; do not name a suspected component.
- Describe movement precisely. Note whether the drum never moved, started and stopped, moved intermittently, or changed only with one load.
- Record the load. Include fabric type, approximate size, unusual wetness, and whether an item was caught at the door. Do not reach into a drum that may move.
- Note recent changes. Include a move, installation, outage, service visit, vent change, new sound, or first affected load.
If the dryer is cool, stationary, and free of an immediate hazard, use only owner-facing observations described in the model manual. Do not pull the dryer away from the wall, disconnect a vent or gas line, remove a cover, or attempt an internal inspection.
Do not turn movement checks into a repair attempt
A stationary drum does not prove which component or condition is responsible. Load conditions, controls, installation, electrical or gas supply, movement systems, and other factors may require in-person assessment. Keep the request factual so the responding provider can decide what qualifications, tools, and access are required.
- Do not rotate or push the drum to test resistance.
- Do not tape, hold, defeat, or bypass a door switch or interlock.
- Do not remove the top, rear, front, control, or access panel.
- Do not probe an outlet, terminal, switch, wire, motor, or control.
- Do not reset a breaker that trips again or replace parts from an online diagnosis.
- Do not run the dryer empty to reproduce scraping, burning odour, or severe vibration.
Stop for fire, gas, electrical, or movement hazards: do not restart the dryer if there is smoke, sparking, burning odour, gas odour, unusual cabinet or plug heat, a hot or damaged cord, a carbon-monoxide alarm, violent movement, or a repeated breaker trip. For smoke or fire, leave and call 911 once safely outside. For gas odour, leave the area and call the gas utility, propane supplier, or 911. Read the dedicated dryer burning-smell safety guidance before thinking about a repair request.
Details that make a dryer movement request useful
- Electric or gas dryer, brand, full model number, and approximate age
- Selected cycle, temperature, dryness setting, and load type
- Whether the controls respond and the drum never starts, stops early, or moves intermittently
- Any code and the exact timing of a click, hum, thump, scrape, or squeal
- Whether the symptom changes with a normal smaller load, without repeated testing
- Whether heat, unusual temperature, odour, smoke, sparks, or a breaker event appeared
- Recent installation, move, outage, service, or vent work
- Whether the door closes normally and an item was visibly caught at its edge
Do not promise access, parts, price, timing, or a diagnosis on the provider’s behalf. Any independent provider who responds confirms scope, qualifications, appointment availability, diagnostic work, and terms directly with the household.
Choose the next page by the main observation
Stay on this page when normal drum movement is absent or stops unexpectedly. If movement is normal but the load remains cool, switch to safe no-heat observations. If movement and heat are present but drying time changed, use the airflow and load comparison guide. For any burning odour, use the stop-use safety page instead of continuing symptom checks.
Prepare a Kelowna dryer repair request
Use the Kelowna dryer repair page to organize the movement, control, sound, load, and safety details for possible review by an independent provider. Local Fix Match organizes the request; it does not diagnose the dryer or guarantee that a provider will accept it.
