Standing water in a dishwasher does not identify the failed part. The useful first step is to record how much water remains, when the cycle stopped, and whether the sink or nearby drain is also affected. Keep the checks visible and accessible: do not pull the dishwasher out, open a panel, or reach into water where broken glass or electricity may be present.

The short answerCancel the cycle and let moving parts stop. Photograph the water level, display, and any fault code. If the dishwasher is cool and the water is safely accessible, look for a large item blocking the visible filter or drain area, but do not remove covers or reach into cloudy water with bare hands. Note whether the sink drains normally and avoid starting repeated cycles that could add more water.

Describe what “not draining” means

  • A shallow pool remains below the lower rack
  • Water covers the filter or reaches the tub floor
  • The cycle stops before the drain stage
  • A hum, click, or silence occurs when draining should begin
  • The dishwasher drains slowly but never empties
  • The sink, disposer, or nearby drain also backs up

Record whether the water is clear, cloudy, greasy, or carrying food debris. Do not taste it or assume that a particular sound proves a pump, hose, control, or plumbing diagnosis.

Safe checks without disassembly

  1. Read the display first. Photograph the exact code, icon, or remaining time before turning controls off.
  2. Wait for the tub to cool. Recently heated water and dishes may burn. Open the door cautiously and keep your face and hands clear of escaping steam.
  3. Remove the racks only if the manual allows it. Look for a utensil or large piece of debris in the visible, user-accessible filter area. Wear appropriate protection if broken glass could be present.
  4. Follow the model manual for filter care. A removable consumer-cleanable filter can be checked as directed. Do not remove a pump cover, wiring cover, toe kick, or secured component.
  5. Check the nearby sink. Note slow drainage or backup without disconnecting hoses or operating equipment you are not trained to use.
  6. Do not run a test load. A new cycle may add water or turn a contained problem into a leak.

Stop and keep clear if water reaches the floor, a cord, receptacle, wiring area, or another electrical device. Do not touch a wet plug or operate a breaker while standing on a wet surface.   • Brand, model number, approximate age, and built-in or portable design
  • Selected cycle and the last stage that completed
  • Standing-water depth and whether it returns after removal
  • Exact fault code and sounds near the drain stage
  • Whether the sink or another connected drain is slow
  • Recent installation, plumbing, disposal, detergent, or filter-cleaning changes
  • Photos of the display, water level, and safely visible tub area
